I'm to the belief that the general non-hunting public has no idea of the extraordinary effort it takes to actually kill a large-game animal. The scouting, the year-round target practicing, scent control, hauling the animal out, and, of course--waking up at 3AM. As youth, I loved waking up this early to go hunting. One tap on the shoulder from my father and I was springing from bed and throwing clothes on with abandon.
Now, not so much. There's nothing fun about waking up this early. Nothing. And every time I do it, I think of all those conversations I've had with non-hunters about how easy it must be to kill a deer, I wonder if they really know what it takes.
Anyway, I'm heading to the Remote 40 and I'm running late. First significant day of hunting. Wish me luck.
